The Okanogan-Wenatchee covers the east slope of the Cascades — drier, sunnier, and emptier than the west side. Free dispersed camping is widespread, with access to the Pasayten Wilderness and Lake Chelan.

Alpine larches turn gold in late September/early October — a brief, magical window almost no one outside the PNW knows about.

Getting there
Highway 20 (North Cascades Hwy) closes in winter; US-2 over Stevens Pass is the year-round access.
Know before you go
- Northwest Forest Pass at established trailheads.
- Cell service spotty east of the crest.
- Larch hike permits (e.g., Enchantments) are competitive — apply early.
