The unofficial winter capital of boondocking — thousands of rigs spread across miles of free and cheap BLM desert.
Every winter a sleepy desert town of 3,500 swells past 100,000 as snowbirds, full-timers, and curious first-timers descend on the BLM Long-Term Visitor Areas around Quartzsite. The desert is flat, the sun is reliable, and the community is unlike anywhere else.
Quartzsite combines three things almost no other spot in North America has: huge tracts of legal free dispersed camping, paid LTVAs with dump stations and water for $180/season, and a built-in community of experienced boondockers. The big RV show in mid-January is a pilgrimage. The rest of the winter feels like a slow, warm, friendly festival.
November through March. December and January are peak.
I-10 between Phoenix and the Colorado River. The town sits right on the interstate, with BLM access on every side.
- La Posa LTVA permit is $180 for the full season, $40 for two weeks — pay at the kiosk.
- Free 14-day boondocking is allowed on the surrounding BLM land (Plomosa Road, Scaddan Wash, Dome Rock).
- Cell service is decent but congested. Verizon and AT&T both work.
- Water and dump are included with the LTVA permit; otherwise pay-per-use at the entrance.
- Arrive before January 10 if you want a quiet spot near friends — the show week is chaos.
- Bring a folding solar panel even in winter — the desert sun delivers all day.
- Big Tent and gem shows are spread across town, not in one place. Walk or bike.
- Eat at the Sweet Darlene's bakery line, but go early — it sells out by 9 AM.
