Boondocking is free, self-contained RV camping on public land — no hookups, no reservations, no fees. We map verified BLM dispersed camping, National Forest roads, rest areas, and overnight-friendly Walmart, Cracker Barrel & Cabela’s lots across the US & Canada.

What is boondocking? (and how it’s different from dry camping)

Boondocking — also called dispersed camping, dry camping, wild camping, or free camping — is overnight camping on undeveloped public land without hookups for water, sewer, or electricity. You bring your own power (solar or generator), pack in water, and pack out all waste. The trade-off for zero fees is full self-sufficiency.

On BLM land and in most National Forests, dispersed camping is legal for up to 14 days per location. Overnight RV parking at Walmart, Cracker Barrel, Cabela’s, Sam’s Club, casinos, and 24-hour truck stops (Pilot, Flying J, Love’s) is a different category — it’s a one-night courtesy stop, not true boondocking, but it’s how most RVers cover long travel days for free.

Every spot on Boondock Finder is community-verified with the road condition, max rig length, cell coverage, and recent visitor reports — so you can roll in confident your rig fits and the spot is still open.
