NE-2 from Grand Island to Alliance is the main scenic route.
Know before you go
- Free camping is harder to find — most options are state recreation areas ($5-$15/night).
- Ticks are real in summer.
- Storms can blow up fast on the plains.
- Resupply in Valentine or Alliance; in between is empty.

- Merritt Reservoir SRA is dark sky designated and gorgeous.
- Valentine NWR has wildlife loops and primitive camping.
- Toadstool Geologic Park (north end) is a small Badlands-style oddity.
- Drive NE-2 at sunset for the rolling-hills light.
