Free dispersed camping right outside the south entrance of Joshua Tree National Park.
When the park campgrounds are full or $30+ a night feels steep, the BLM land just south of Joshua Tree's Cottonwood entrance is the answer. Wide open creosote desert with a clean view of the mountains and no camping fee.
Why it's special
Park access without the park price. You're 10 minutes from the southern entrance, and the night sky is darker than the park itself.
Best time to go
October–April. Summer is brutal — 110°F is normal.
Getting there
I-10 exit 168 (Cottonwood Spring Road), then north a few hundred yards to the BLM access road on either side.
Know before you go
- 14-day stay limit on BLM.
- Pack out trash and human waste — this area gets hit hard.
- No fires without a metal container.
- Strong winds are common; stake down awnings or retract them.

- Day-trip into the park from here and avoid the entrance station queue at sunrise.
- The Cottonwood Visitor Center has free water (jugs only, no hose).
- Coachella Valley is 30 minutes for groceries and laundry.
- Bring a tarp for shade — almost no natural shade out here.
