Some of Colorado's quietest, highest, prettiest free camping — built around Crested Butte and the Elk Range.
Crested Butte gets the magazine covers; the surrounding Gunnison NF is where the boondockers actually camp. Spruce-fir forests at 9,000–11,000 ft, alpine meadows, wildflowers in July that look fake, and dispersed sites on every drainage.
Why it's special
It's the high country experience without the crowds of the Front Range. You can find a site with a creek and a mountain view on a Friday night in July.

Late June through September. Wildflowers peak mid-July.
Getting there
Gunnison, CO, then north on CO-135 to Crested Butte. Forest roads branch east and west the entire way.
Know before you go
- Higher roads stay snow-blocked into mid-June.
- Real grizzly country to the north, but the Gunnison side is black bear only — still secure food.
- Afternoon thunderstorms above treeline are non-negotiable; plan around them.
- 14-day stay limit.
Pro tips from boondockers
- Washington Gulch and Slate River roads out of Crested Butte are full of free sites with mountain views.
- Lake Irwin (small fee) for an established site with a swimming-temp alpine lake.
- Top off fuel in Gunnison — Crested Butte gas is expensive.
- Late July is the wildflower festival; come for it once.
