Free dispersed camping with Teton views — the cheapest way to camp near Jackson Hole.
Grand Teton National Park campgrounds are full and expensive. The Bridger-Teton National Forest on the east side of the range has Shadow Mountain and Toppings Lake roads with the same view of the Grand for $0.
Why it's special
You wake up to the actual Teton Range from your camp chair. There's no other free camping in North America with a view like that.
Best time to go
Late June through September. Memorial Day is too early — snow still on the roads.
Getting there
Shadow Mountain Road (FR 30340) off Antelope Flats Road, east of Moose, WY.
Know before you go
- 5-day stay limit (shorter than the usual 14).
- Hard grizzly country — bear spray and food storage are non-negotiable.
- No water, no toilets, no fires during typical summer restrictions.
- Sites fill by midday in July and August — arrive early or have a backup.
Pro tips from boondockers
- Drive to the top of Shadow Mountain for the unobstructed view; sites near the top are coveted.
- Toppings Lake Road is quieter but less view.
- Jackson groceries are tourist-priced; resupply in Idaho Falls if you're coming from the west.
- Get a Yellowstone-Tetons pass; you'll use it.
