Big Bend National Park is one of the least visited in the lower 48 because it's nowhere near anywhere. The dispersed camping on BLM land around Terlingua and Study Butte is even quieter, with the same Chisos Mountain views and dark skies that border on aggressive.
Big Bend has the darkest measured night sky in the contiguous US. Add no neighbors, hot springs along the river, and ghost-town vibes in Terlingua and you have a winter destination unlike any other.

Study Butte/Terlingua, TX. From Alpine, 80 miles south on TX-118. Stock up in Alpine — Terlingua prices are tourist prices.
- BLM dispersed and Big Bend Ranch State Park primitive sites are the main options.
- Cell service is essentially zero across the region.
- Border Patrol checkpoints on every road back north — carry ID.
- Water in town is limited; bring more than you think.
- Hot springs at the river bend inside the national park are the best free soak in Texas.
- Terlingua Ghostown porch at sunset is a real scene; go once.
- Watch for free-roaming javelinas at night — they're loud and they don't move for you.
- Marfa is 90 minutes north if you want a culture day.
