British Columbia maintains a network of over 1,200 Recreation Sites — small, simple, often free camping spots on lakes, rivers, and forest roads. It's one of the largest distributed camping networks in North America.
Why it's special
BC's rec sites are quintessentially Canadian — small, scenic, well-stewarded, mostly free or under $20. You can plan a whole summer hopping between them.

Know before you go
- Most are free; some user-maintained ($10-$20).
- Roads in are often gravel; some require high clearance.
- Grizzly and black bear country across most of BC.
- Cell service ends fast off paved highways.

- Smaller sites with longer access roads are quieter.
- Pack out everything — these sites stay nice because people care.
- First come, first served; arrive Thursday for weekend spots.
